“The passing of this great man, one of the greatest thinkers, writers and humanists of the twentieth century, is an irreplaceable loss for Russia and the entire world”, Mr Medvedev said in his telegram. “Alexander Isayevich gave his entire life to his Fatherland, served his country as a true citizen and patriot and devoted himself with all his heart to the fate of the Russian people and a fair and just system for the country’s life.
Alexander Isayevich was untiring in his efforts to build the moral and spiritual ideals that he considered a vital foundation for the state and society, and he fought to see them prevail. His name will forever be associated with the idea of protecting and preserving the Russian people, and his studies of the turning points in Russian history have contributed immensely to the world’s cultural development and to the personal development of millions of people.
His name will be bound forever to Russia’s destiny. The memory of Alexander Isayevich Solzhenitsyn will live forever in our hearts.”
Alexander Solzhenitsyn, who won the Nobel Prize for Literature, died on August 3, 2008, aged 89.
