President Dmitry Medvedev signed a federal law ratifying Protocol V on the Explosive Remnants of War to the Convention on Prohibitions or Restrictions on the Use of Certain Conventional Weapons which may be Deemed to be Excessively Injurious or to have Indiscriminate Effects

May 16, 2008

The Protocol was adopted at a conference of the states-parties to the Convention in Geneva on November 28, 2003.

Under the Protocol’s terms, the states-parties take on obligations to clear territory (defusing, removing or destroying) of explosive remnants of war (this term covers unexploded grenades, artillery shells, bombs and similar ammunition) in the post-conflict period.

The Protocol’s provisions apply only to future armed conflicts.

Ratification of the Protocol will make it possible to adapt the provisions of the Convention and its protocols to the reality of today, which is in keeping with Russia’s interests.
