Mr Berlusconi congratulated Mr Medvedev on his inauguration as President of Russia.

Mr Medvedev, for his part, congratulated Mr Berlusconi on obtaining a vote of confidence in the government he heads.

Both leaders noted the high level of cooperation that Russia and Italy have developed in various areas and stated their desire to continue building up bilateral relations.

Future contacts were also discussed, including the upcoming G8 summit in Japan.
