Russia is marking the Day of Memory and Grief

Commemorating the 70th anniversary of the start of the Great Patriotic War, Dmitry Medvedev paid tribute to the memory of the fallen and laid a wreath before the Eternal Flame at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

Also taking part in the ceremony were Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, State Duma Speaker Boris Gryzlov, Acting Speaker of the Federation Council Alexander Torshin, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, Defence Minister Anatoly Serdyukov, Emergency Situations Minister Sergei Shoigu, the heads of other ministries and agencies, Great Patriotic War veterans, military commanders, and representatives of the public.

A solemn march through the Alexander Garden by servicemen from the Moscow Garrison, representing the army, air force, and navy, concluded the ceremony.

Russia has marked June 22 as the Day of Memory and Grief since 1996.
