Agreement on a Russian military base in South Ossetia has been submitted to the State Duma for ratification

Dmitry Medvedev submitted to the State Duma for ratification the Agreement between the Russian Federation and the Republic of South Ossetia on an Integrated Russian Military Base on the Republic of South Ossetia’s Territory, signed in Moscow on April 7, 2010.

The Agreement’s provisions regulate the respective parties’ jurisdictions regarding the integrated Russian military base on South Ossetian territory.

The Agreement sets out the procedures for using the base’s military forces in coordination with the South Ossetian armed forces to protect the sovereignty and security of the Russian Federation and the Republic of South Ossetia, and the procedures for the use and operation of the base’s facilities and other fixed property. The Agreement also defines the status of the base’s personnel, servicemen’s families and civilian personnel, and other issues related to the base’s functioning.
