Mr Medvedev and Mr Smirnov agreed to continue tripartite negotiations on a settlement between Trans-Dniester and Moldova.
As Mr Medvedev said in an interview with Italian television channel RAI the previous day, Russia is ready to act as a mediator in these negotiations. The President said he thinks there are good prospects for reaching a settlement.
The Trans-Dniester issue was also on the agenda at Mr Medvedev’s meeting with President of Moldova Vladimir Voronin on August 25, in Sochi, at which the two leaders agreed to continue consultations on resolving the problems in the region.
