During his visit to Magadan Region, Dmitry Medvedev learned about the production of gold and silver ingots at the Kolyma Affinage Plant and visited the Magadan Regional History Museum

September 24, 2008

Mr Medvedev visited Kolyma Affinage Plant’s production workshops, and learned about the technological process of turning the raw materials into finished products, and the purifying and smelting techniques used to produce gold and silver ingots of the highest quality.

The plant, located 80 kilometres from Magadan, is equipped with modern technological and analysis equipment and produces chemically pure precious metals from ore mined at fields in the Magadan, Chukotka, Kamchatka and Khabarovsk Regions and also in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia).

The President later visited the Magadan Regional History Museum and saw exhibitions on Dalstroi, the state trust for industrial and road construction in the Upper Kolyma District, Kolyma, an exhibition presenting a collection of historical materials on the history of the Stalin-era repressions, and Gold of Kolyma, about Magadan Region’s rich natural resources.

At the end of his visit, Mr Medvedev signed the guests’ book with the words: “The history of Magadan Region’s development is both dramatic and inspiring. The museum reflects the most difficult times in the Kolyma region’s development and its exhibitions are especially valuable in that they give a real picture of that era.”

Earlier in the day, Mr Medvedev laid flowers at the Mask of Sorrow memorial to the victims of political repression in Magadan.
