Dmitry Medvedev held the first meeting of the Anti-Corruption Council which discussed a package of anti-corruption bills

September 30, 2008, The Kremlin, Moscow

The head of state said that the priorities in the fight against corruption include strengthening the legal system, protecting property rights and the expansion of free enterprise. The main framework for this endeavour is the National Anti-Corruption Plan and fundamentally lowering the level of corruption represents a strategic challenge, the President said.

As he noted that the bills being discussed at the meeting affect every citizen and society as a whole, the President stressed that the bills must be duly examined in both chambers of parliament, by the regions of the Russian Federation, and by the institutions of civil society.

Following the meeting Dmitry Medvedev will present the package to the State Duma.
