Dmitry Medvedev congratulated Russia's teachers on Teacher's Day

October 5, 2008

“The honourable, noble and in many respects selfless work of teachers, filled with deep spiritual substance, has always had special respect in our country”, Mr Medvedev said in his message. “It is your skill as teachers, and your wisdom and patience that shape the professional development of the young generation and ensure their reliable preparation for life and moral health.

Today, in this century of new technological breakthroughs and innovation, education plays a crucial part in individual success and in the country’s dynamic development and competitiveness. It is clear that the role of teachers and the prestige of their work are only set to grow.

I am sure that Russia’s teachers will continue to be distinguished by their sensitive and caring attitude towards their pupils and their loyalty to the glorious traditions of Russian education”.

Starting in 1965, Russia celebrated Teacher’s Day on the first Sunday in October. Over the last 14 years, the holiday has been marked on October 5, together with World Teachers’ Day, established by UNESCO in 1994.
