Dmitry Medvedev sent a greeting to participants and guests of the 9th Russian-Finnish Cultural Forum that opened in Jyvaskyla, Finland

October 9, 2008

The message reads, in particular:

“You will discuss key issues concerning cooperation between our countries in the cultural and educational spheres, and determine the long-term priorities of this cooperation. Prominent scientists, cultural figures, artists, representatives of civil society and youth movements will share their experiences and discuss interesting joint projects.

Russia and Finland are close neighbors and reliable partners in Europe with a rich tradition of cultural cooperation. A tradition which for many centuries now has served the spiritual enrichment of our peoples.

It is heartening to see that the forum is paying particular attention to educational and cultural issues that concern young people. The future of our relations as well as strengthening trust and friendship between our states depends precisely on this younger generation.

I am convinced that the forum will enhance the creation of a single cultural, scientific and educational space, and will enable us to launch new initiatives and endeavours.”

This forum is attended by representatives from both countries and is held annually, alternately in Finland and Russia. This year its theme is The Future Here and Now: Culture, Youth and Education.
