Vladimir Putin laid flowers at the monument to Kuzma Minin and Dmitry Pozharsky on Red Square on the National Unity Day.
Also taking part in the ceremony were the leaders of Russia’s traditional religions and members of Russian youth organisations.
A reception took place later at the Kremlin to mark the holiday.
The National Unity Day was established as a national public holiday in 2005 to commemorate the events of 1612, when the people’s volunteer army led by Kuzma Minin and Dmitry Pozharsky liberated Moscow from the foreign interventionist forces.
