Dmitry Medvedev discussed the preliminary results of regional elections with Chairman of the Central Electoral Commission Vladimir Churov

Mr Churov informed the President that the elections took place without incident and voter turnout was higher practically everywhere. He also reported on a successful experiment using voting via the Internet in the town of Novomoskovsk (Tula Region).

Mr Medvedev said this kind of technology should be developed and the relevant changes made to the law so as to ensure that all citizens have the chance to use these means to express their will.

The President also said that the results of these elections should ensure the authorities can continue performing their functions effectively and ensure maximum transparency of decisions taken.

Elections at different levels took place on a single day of voting – October 12, 2008 — in 77 regions. Elections to the regional parliaments took place in five regions: the Republic of Chechnya, Trans-Baikal Region, Kemerovo Region, Sakhalin Region, and Irkutsk Region.
