Viewing of athletic facilities

May 10, 2013, Sochi

Vladimir Putin and David Cameron viewed Olympic facilities in Sochi from a helicopter, including those in the mountain cluster and the Imereti Valley, and visited the Fisht Central Olympic Stadium, which was designed and is being built with participation by British companies.

The Fisht Stadium’s location in the Olympic park allows spectators to simultaneously see the mountain tops to the north and the sea to the south. The 40,000-seat Fisht Stadium which translates from Adygei as White Head is named after a mountain that rises more than 2,800 meters above sea level and is topped with a glacier. Its snow cap served as the prototype for the arena’s architectural conceptual design. The stadium will hold the opening and closing ceremonies for the 2014 Olympic Games.

Following completion of David Cameron’s visit to Russia, the President was joined by Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Kozak, Sports Minister Vitaly Mutko and Russian Olympic Committee President Alexander Zhukov in touring the premises that will serve as the location for the National Children’s Sports and Education Centre. At a March 30 meeting on the use of Olympic facilities after the games, the President gave instructions to submit suggestions on establishing such a centre. The final decision on the centre’s location will be made in the near future.
