The statement said, in part:

“The last nuclear weapon removed from Ukraine on the resolution of the Russian, US and Ukrainian presidents of January 14, 1994, was destroyed late in October 2001.

“The relevant clauses of the Protocol to the Treaty on Strategic Offensive Reductions have thus been implemented in compliance with one of the essential provisos of the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty as Ukraine has chosen nuclear-free status.”
