President Vladimir Putin held a meeting with Prosecutor General Vladimir Ustinov, Russia's Defence Minister Sergei Ivanov, Chief of General Staff Anatoly Kvashnin, and Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy Vladimir Kuroyedov

December 1, 2001, The Kremlin, Moscow

Vladimir Putin first received the Prosecutor General who informed him of the interim results of the investigation into the causes of the Kursk nuclear submarine disaster.

The President then had a meeting with Sergei Ivanov, Anatoly Kvashnin, Vladimir Kuroyedov and Vladimir Ustinov.

Addressing participants at the meeting, Vladimir Putin stressed that all the conclusions made were of an interim nature and failed to explain the causes of the disaster and the chain of events. All possibilities are being examined, including the submarine’s collusion with an unidentified submerged object, the President said.

He instructed the Defence Minister, Chief of General Staff, and Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy to set forth their proposals not only on personnel issues but also on the entire system of measures aimed at improving the Navy’s performance.
