Presidents Vladimir Putin of Russia and Fernando Henrique Cardoso of Brazil held negotiations

Mr Putin and Mr Cardoso agreed to improve the trade pattern by including hi tech industries. President Putin said these could be aerospace, telecommunications, energy (including nuclear energy) and metallurgy sectors.

The talks also dealt with cooperation in farming, contacts to promote fair international economic relations, and prospects for Russia’s entry into the World Trade Organisation.

Mr Putin said that Russian-Brazilian relations had a great future. He called the Brazilian President’s visit a landmark event.

The two leaders also discussed international issues, including disarmament and strategic stability.

Mr Putin accepted an invitation to visit Brazil.
