March 18, 2002, The Kremlin, Moscow

The President said that though the diplomats represented different regions, they would have to tackle similar tasks. According to him, civilisation should be stable and dynamic in this century, but its progress is hindered by strategic and regional instability, drug trafficking, ecological crises and economic inequality.

Russia wants to see Afghanistan become an independent and prospering state, said Vladimir Putin receiving credentials from the Afghan Ambassador, Ahmad Zia Massoud. The President noted that his brother, Ahmad Shah Massoud, was well known and respected in Russia.

Addressing South Korean Ambassador Chung Tae Ik, Vladimir Putin said that Russia favoured a deeper cooperation between North and South Korea and aimed to strengthen Russian-Korean humanitarian, trade and economic relations.

Addressing the Greek ambassador, the President said that both Russia and Greece were interested in turning the Balkans and the East Mediterranean into a region of stability and sustainable development.

Vladimir Putin also noted that there was mutual trust and friendship among people with a common history in Russian-Kazakh relations and pointed to positive dynamics in relations with Romania. He also said that he appreciated Russia’s good relations with the Kingdom of Lesotho.
