President Vladimir Putin had a telephone conversation with British Prime Minister Anthony Blair

May 23, 2002

The British Prime Minister congratulated the Russian President on the conclusion of the preparations and the forthcoming signing of the Russian-American Treaty on Strategic Offensive Reductions which he described as having global significance.

On international issues, the leaders of the two countries discussed the dangerous situation developing between India and Pakistan. Both sides expressed profound concern over the escalation of tensions between New Delhi and Islamabad. They stressed the need to coordinate efforts to prevent local clashes from developing into a full-scale armed conflict, and to bring down the level of confrontation and stabilise the relations between India and Pakistan.

The Russian President and the British Prime Minister discussed some concrete issues connected with the forthcoming Russia-NATO summit in Rome and some aspects of the preparation for the G8 meeting in Kananaskis (Canada).
