President Vladimir Putin discussed the situation in Dagestan and Ingushetia and in the Caucasus as a whole with the leaders of those two republics

May 16, 2002, Bocharov Ruchei, Sochi

Dagestan is developing in a positive direction, but there are many outstanding problems in the republic, including security, the President stressed during a meeting with Chairman of Dagestan’s State Council Magomedali Magomedov. Mr Putin stressed that if the problem of security is not solved other problems would be very difficult to solve.

The problems connected with Dagestan’s economy were also discussed during the meeting in the presence of First Deputy Finance Minister Alexei Ulyukayev, the President’s Plenipotentiary Representative in the Southern Federal District Viktor Kazantsev, Deputy Chief of the President’s Executive Office Alexander Abramov and Deputy Minister of Economic Development Mukhamed Tsikanov.

During the meeting with the President of Ingushetia, President Putin spoke of the need to consolidate society in the republic. He expressed hope that Mr Zyazikov would manage to involve the republic’s ex-president Ruslan Aushev in addressing the problems of the region.

Mr Putin noted that there were more problems in Ingushetia than meets the eye. He noted that even the creation of an offshore zone in the republic had not resolved the region’s economic problems. The President admitted that migration placed a heavy burden on Ingushetia. The problem must be solved together with its neighbours in order to spare people the humiliation of living in camps, the Russian President said.
