President Vladimir Putin, Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma and German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder signed a joint agreement on the exploitation of the main pipeline running through Ukrainian territory and providing uninterrupted supplies of Russian gas to European countries

June 10, 2002, St Petersburg

The agreement stipulated the setting up a special consortium of Russia, Ukraine and Germany. Germany’s participation is to attract $2.5 billion for reconstruction and over $15 billion for developing the pipeline system on Ukrainian territory in the following 10 years.

At a news conference following the talks, Mr Putin expressed confidence that cooperation between Russia, Ukraine and Germany in the gas sector would increase the reliability of the functioning of the gas pipeline system, as well as European partners’ confidence in Russia.

The Presidents of Russia and Ukraine had recently agreed to set up a Russian-Ukrainian consortium during their meeting in St Petersburg.
