The Presidents discussed bilateral relations. They stated that the two countries’ trade and economic relations were still lagging behind the existing potential and pointed out that there was an opportunity to implement large-scale bilateral projects.
At the meeting, the Presidents also touched upon the need to sign an agreement between Russia and Azerbaijan on the delimitation of the Caspian seabed.
Vladimir Putin and Heidar Aliev exchanged views on the ways to settle current conflicts in the Caucasus, including the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
The Presidents also discussed Russian-Azerbaijani political and trade and economic relations. At Mr Aliev’s request, Mr Putin informed him of the results of the Russian-American summit, the Russia-NATO summit and Russia-EU relations.
Earlier in the day, Mr Putin and Mr Aliev were present at the ceremony unveiling a monument to the world-famous Azerbaijani poet Nizami Ganjavi in St Petersburg.
