President Vladimir Putin chaired a meeting with the local authorities of Stavropol and, by teleconference, with the authorities of the flood-stricken regions

June 28, 2002, Stavropol

Opening the meeting, the President expressed his condolences to the relatives of those killed by the natural disaster.

Mr Putin outlined the priority measures to rebuild the areas devastated by the snowmelt flood. He emphasized that all efforts should be concentrated on the early restoration of housing. Some of the urgent tasks the President mentioned included the provision of medical aid, prevention of epidemics, security measures to protect people in temporary dwellings and their property in abandoned housing.

Mr Putin also spoke about the need to take some organisational measures to send schoolchildren to summer camps and to create opportunities for school-leavers who wish to enter colleges and universities.

The President stressed the importance of the early restoration of regional infrastructure, above all transport routes, electricity supply and communications.

He insisted that the governors should strictly observe the schedule and deadlines of restoration projects.
