President Vladimir Putin congratulated Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze on the 10th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Russia and Georgia

July 1, 2002

The congratulatory message read in part:

“This event is a major landmark in the centuries-old history of our friendly countries and peoples.

A solid legal framework for bilateral cooperation has been created by joint efforts over the past decade. Trade is developing, as well as ties between economic entities and regions and a dialogue is being conducted at various levels on the entire spectrum of Russian-Georgian relations. We achieved a positive experience of cooperation within the CIS and the Caucasian Group of Four. Our countries are cooperating with the UN, the OSCE and other international organisations.

Under current conditions, the united actions of Russia and Georgia in the fight against international terrorism, which is fraught with a real danger not only to our states but to the entire international community, are of special importance. Joint actions of Russian and Georgian law-enforcement agencies should bring practical results in neutralising the militants and putting an end to their accomplices’ activities.

I believe the finalisation of the Treaty of Friendship which is now being drafted will be a major step towards strengthening relations between our two countries and propelling them to a still higher level.

I am convinced that the peoples of Russia and Georgia will manage to preserve and multiply the traditions of friendship laid by former generations.”
