August 8, 2002, Moscow

About 80 people drowned as a result of a flood caused by torrential rains. Six towns and villages were flooded, roads eroded and passenger trains stopped near Novorossiisk.

Following the President’s instructions, a group of 53 rescuers from the Emergencies Ministry led by Deputy Emergencies Minister Gennady Korotkin was sent to the disaster area from Moscow. A 100-strong mobile interservice team of the Emergencies Ministry was formed in the Southern Federal District.

Vladimir Putin had a telephone conversation with Alexander Tkachev, governor of the Krasnodar Region. He told him to focus on assisting children and train passengers involved in the disaster area.
