President Vladimir Putin met with the command of the Pacific Fleet

August 28, 2002, Vladivostok

At the Pacific Fleet headquarters, President Putin chaired a meeting with the Fleet’s commanding staff, focusing on the Fleet’s combat training, material and technical supplies, and the economic condition of sailors.

In his address the President indicated that the execution of tactical objectives, including teamwork with overseas partners, as was the case during a recent exercise on the Caspian, was of special significance. The President also named some of the priorities which the command must bear in mind in its work. The main goal, he said, was to maintain the combat readiness of the Fleet’s units and elements, especially the strategic nuclear forces.

The President instructed Defence Minister Sergei Ivanov to organise a large-scale military exercise in the Far East next year.
