President Vladimir Putin had a telephone conversation with Romano Prodi, President of the European Commission

September 26, 2002

The main topic of the conversation, held on the initiative of the European Commission, was the problem of ensuring a vital infrastructure for the Kaliningrad Region because of EU expansion.

Romano Prodi explained some points of the message he recently sent to the Russian President on the current EU vision of possible ways to ensure a privileged system for Russian citizens travelling to and from the Kaliningrad Region.

Though the versions proposed by the President of the European Commission cannot be regarded as the final decision, the main thing is the political will of Russia and the European Union to work out a compromise solution, the President said.

In discussing other relevant international problems, Mr Putin and Mr Prodi exchanged opinions on the situation around Iraq and admitted the need for UN inspectors to immediately begin their activities in Iraq.
