President Vladimir Putin met with Chilean President Ricardo Lagos

October 4, 2002, The Kremlin, Moscow

Following the official talks, Vladimir Putin and Ricardo Lagos signed a joint statement. The document states the satisfaction at the dynamic development of the century old relations between Russia and Chile.

Mr Putin and Mr Lagos stressed the necessity of intensifying bilateral trade, economic, investment, technological and scientific collaboration and of working out appropriate financial mechanisms to promote it. The commitment to act on mutually beneficial projects in the areas of transport and energy was also emphasised.

The statement says that Russia and Chile both agree about the urgent need of guaranteeing the absence of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq by implementing to the fullest extent the corresponding UN Security Council resolutions. The document also notes in this connection that the mission of international observers should be set up in that country as soon as possible.

The heads of states underlined the necessity of establishing a lasting peace in the Middle East in accordance with the norms of the international law, regulations of the respective UN Security Council resolutions and the principles of the 1991 Madrid conference.

The presidents also declared that the ultimate objective of the coordinated joint activities in Afghanistan should be the development of the peaceful, independent and prosperous Afghan state maintaining good relations with its neighbours and the rest of the world community.

The heads of states pointed at the importance of enhancing the role of the United Nations in peace-keeping operations and settlement of humanitarian crises.

A joint news conference by the two Presidents was held upon the completion of the talks where President Putin declared the plans of Russia and Chile to set up an intergovernmental commission on trade and economic cooperation.
