President Vladimir Putin had a telephone conversation with NATO Secretary-General George Robertson

October 27, 2002

On behalf of all NATO members, Mr Robertson expressed his condolences to the families and friends of those who were killed during the hostage crisis in Moscow, and said the decision to conduct a rescue operation was difficult but the only one possible.

Mr Robertson said NATO had high regard for the level of professionalism and dignity of the people who conducted the anti-terrorist operation in Moscow.

Mr Putin said the international community’s sympathy was very important for Russia.
