The Russian head of state spoke at one of the oldest universities in China in front of over 800 students and professors, as well as Chinese graduates of Russian and Soviet Union universities. Chinese President Jiang Zemin met Mr Putin at the entrance to the rectory building. The leaders had a short conversation.
Before his address, Mr Putin presented the university with a book written by Mr Jiang and published in Russia in Russian language.
In his address, the Russian President said that Russia and China, both permanent members of the UN Security Council, had a special responsibility for maintaining safety and stability in the world. Mr Putin noted Russia and China completely shared approaches to and priorities of their foreign policy.
