President Vladimir Putin signed the Federal Law “On introducing additions to Article 3 of the Russian Federation Law 'On the Languages of the Russian Federation'.”

December 12, 2002

The Federal Law stated that the Russian language and the state languages of the republics within the Russian Federation use the Cyrillic alphabet.

Any other alphabets of the Russian national language and the national languages of the republics can be set only by the federal laws.
