President Putin made the musician a gift of a small painting. In response the famed viola player presented his book and discs with recordings of the music he performed.

On the same day the President sent Mr Bashmet a congratulatory message, saying, in part:

“Your masterly performing and conducting skills have won you the highest professional recognition and captured the hearts of millions of true music lovers.

“Your unique creative artistry and tremendous educational achievements are a great contribution to Russian spiritual heritage and world culture.”
