President Vladimir Putin held a meeting with President Emomali Rakhmonov of Tajikistan

January 28, 2003, Kiev

Mr Putin and Mr Rakhmonov discussed ways of how better to deal with drug smuggling from Afghanistan.

Mr Rakhmonov noted that the Tajik authorities were working hard to cut supply routes from the neighbouring countries. As estimated by the United Nations, Tajikistan leads the CIS and Central Asia for the amount of seized narcotics. Nonetheless the flow of contraband continues to grow. Mr Rakhmonov said the problem should be addressed at source, in Afghanistan, rather than on the Tajik border. He said he had discussed the subject with American, British and French leaders and all of them agreed to help with the problem.

President Putin also promised support and called for better coordination of efforts between the Russian and Tajik secret services in their fight against cross-border drug trafficking.
