Vladimir Putin held talks with Nursultan Nazarbayev, President of Kazakhstan

February 18, 2003, The Kremlin, Moscow

Vladimir Putin and Nursultan Nazarbayev expressed the hope that the opening Year of Kazakhstan in Russia would bring the two countries even closer together, both politically and economically.

The development of trade and economic ties was a central theme at the talks. Vladimir Putin noted a stable and high level of relations between Russia and Kazakhstan, citing as evidence the forthcoming forum of EurAsEC to be held in Moscow on the Kazakh President’s initiative.

Russia and Kazakhstan will consistently implement their bilateral agreements, in particular in nuclear power engineering, such as the building of a nuclear power plant near Lake Balkhash with Russia’s participation.

The Presidents discussed the transit of Kazakh oil via Russia, the legal status of the Caspian Sea, and also the prolongation of Russia’s lease of the Baikonur Spaceport.

They also discussed some international issues, including the fight against terrorism.
