The conversation took place on Britain’s initiative just before a meeting of the UN Security Council in New York and took more than an hour.
The two leaders discussed in detail current international issues and paid special attention to the Iraqi conflict. Mr Putin again (as in his earlier conversation with US President George W. Bush) stressed that Russia stood for a peaceful, diplomatic settlement of the conflict as fully corresponding to Resolution 1441 of the UN Security Council.
The two men agreed to maintain dialogue on the Iraqi problem.
