President Vladimir Putin spoke by telephone with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan

Mr Putin congratulated Mr Erdogan on his election as Prime Minister of Turkey.

Both leaders confirmed their intention to develop Russian-Turkish cooperation in all spheres, including the fuel and energy industry.

When exchanging opinions on the Iraqi crisis, the two leaders expressed a unanimous view in favour of halting military action and finding a peaceful settlement of the conflict under the aegis of the UN Security Council.

The Russian President also sent a message to the Turkish Prime Minister.

The message said, in part:

“I think that your election as prime minister is the logical confirmation of a course for stabilisation of the political and economic situation in the country, which is supported by the Turkish people.

“I am sure that your actions as Prime Minister will help develop Russian-Turkish relations in all spheres to the benefit of the long-term national interests of Russia and Turkey.

“We count upon the maintenance and development of constructive dialogue that was started in Moscow in December 2002. I am sure that our trust-based relations will help the further realisation of Russian-Turkish potential to the benefit of our countries, peace and stability in our common Eurasian region.”
