During his meeting with pediatric surgeon Leonid Roshal, President Vladimir Putin assessed the situation in Iraq and the prospects for Russian-US relations

April 3, 2003, Novo-Ogaryovo

The Russian approach to the crisis in Iraq had not changed. The latest developments proved that Moscow had taken the right stance, Mr Putin said while replying to a question from a journalist who attended the meeting.

Mr Putin said that he would do everything possible to prevent Russia from getting involved in the Iraqi crisis.

The President stressed that Russia was not interested in the United States suffering a moral and political defeat in Iraq. The US was a major economic partner for Russia. Its economy and currency were global, and their development had an impact on the Russian and European economies. The dollar downslide would hit Russian private savings and Central Bank reserves.

Russia intended to proceed in its bilateral relations with the US out of the necessity of strengthening the pillars of the international law and the agencies of international security, to be led by the United Nations, Mr Putin said.
