President Vladimir Putin visited the Space Forces headquarters

April 5, 2003, Moscow

President Putin chaired a meeting with the command staff of the Space Forces and visited the command post of the forces and the forces’ museum, where he signed the distinguished visitors’ book.

Replying to questions by the journalists accompanying him, the President said that one of the priorities of the Space Forces was the renewal of the missile and nuclear attack warning system.

According to their development plan, the Space Forces were now moving to a new generation of space equipment, a generation with a longer craft service life. There are also plans to improve the system of information support, which, according to President Putin, would be more effective in military terms.

Mr Putin was also asked about the prospects for strategic offensive reductions. President Putin said that Russia was interested in the ratification of the Strategic Offensive Reductions Treaty, despite the unfavourable background created for further work on the ratification of this agreement because of the different approaches of Russia and the US to the Iraqi issue.
