The heads of state and government who attended the events to mark the 300th anniversary of St Petersburg launch the “St Petersburg Appeal.”

June 1, 2003

The document calls on all the countries, international organizations and non-governmental forces in the world to pool their efforts in preserving the cultural heritage of civilization, asserting the ideals of humanism, mutual understanding and cooperation among all peoples.

All people of good will, all political and non-governmental movements, the document says, must display solidarity in the face of global challenges that confront mankind in the early 3rd millennium. They are international terrorism, organized crime and the drugs trade, acute social problems, environmental pollution and epidemics.

The heads of state and government who had arrived in St Petersburg, expressed their conviction that a firm commitment to universally recognized norms of international law and eternal moral values would provide a solid basis for joint actions in the name of universal peace and progress and the building of a worthy future for posterity.
