Vladimir Putin held a meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien

June 2, 2003, Evian, France

The Russian President and the Canadian Prime Minister have discussed practical issues of deeper bilateral relations and a plan of political contacts at various levels.

The main aim of the talks between the two leaders was the broadening of economic cooperation on the basis of the Russian-Canadian Action Plan adopted during Jean Chretien’s visit to Moscow in 2002 at the head of leaders of the country’s business community.

Vladimir Putin recalled the agreements reached at the previous G8 Summit at Kananaskis (Canada), notably the programme of global partnership. According to the President, the programme aimed at destroying the arsenals of nuclear and other mass destruction weapons stockpiled during the Cold War has already been initiated.
