President Vladimir Putin met with representatives of Russian and foreign energy companies and Global Energy Prize winners

June 15, 2003, Strelna

Among the issues discussed were the development of world energy, world energy security and the current status and future of the Russian fuel and energy sector.

Vladimir Putin noted that under production sharing agreements preference should be given only to those companies that face considerable risks. The Russian Government should treat Russian and foreign participants in the process equally, he stressed.

During the meeting the President said that Russia would shortly adopt an energy strategy for the period to 2020. The document would lay down guidelines for government policy in the use of energy resources and determine the parameters of interaction between the government and business in that sphere.

Traditionally, Russia has been the biggest and most reliable supplier of energy resources to the world market. Today Russian companies are actively developing new markets in Asia and the Far East. They plan to bring in new fields in Eastern Siberia, Sakhalin and the Russian zone of the Caspian Sea. Vladimir Putin stressed that Russia was interested in seeing a world energy market that is predictable and stable and not subject to volatility.

In the President’s opinion, Russia could become a key link in ensuring global energy security.
