Vladimir Putin and his wife visited Queen Elizabeth II's residence in Scotland, the Holyroodhouse Palace

June 25, 2003, Edinburgh

The guests examined an exhibition of unique jewelry by Karl Faberge featuring more than 300 items.

Holyroodhouse Palace is adjacent to a semi-dilapidated building of the famous Holyrood Abbey founded under King David I in the 10th century.

A guesthouse built by the side of the monastery soon became a favourite residence of the Kings and Queens of Scotland.

The present palace did not begin to be built until the 15th century, and was significantly refurbished after the fire of 1650.

The palace became an actual residence under Queen Victoria when she chose to stay there when visiting Scotland. Since then the Holyroodhouse Palace has the status of official residence of the British monarchs during their stay in Edinburgh.
