June 27, 2003, Kaliningrad

Before the meeting, President Putin visited the university's museum and looked at a collection of ancient and modern Russian and German books.

Talking to students, Mr Putin said that the Kaliningrad Region should be a good example of Russia’s cooperation with Europe.

Certain troubles, conditioned by the region’s geographic position, now are of a technical nature and will be solved, Mr Putin said. He mentioned, in particular, a new Aeroflot economy-class passenger flight, Kaliningrad-Moscow-Kaliningrad.

President Putin said that ferry traffic and land transportation would be developed. Also, a new law on the free economic zone would be made by autumn.

Energy supply, transportation and communications are a top priority, Mr Putin said. He also answered questions on reforming the educational system and Russian foreign policy.

Kaliningrad State University is the largest educational institution in the region. Twelve thousand students study 37 disciplines at the university.
