Those who took part in the construction of the Bureya Hydroelectric Power Station have achieved a miracle, President Vladimir Putin announced at the ceremonial commissioning of the plant’s first generating unit

July 9, 2003

In the head of state’s opinion, the Bureya plant is a very important facility for the country, while it will also become the foundation for the Far East’s economic development.

The president reminded those present that the construction of the hydroelectric power station had been planned decades ago. Building work was started in the middle of the 1980s, but then abandoned in the early 1990s. Only thanks to the efforts of the builders has work been successfully completed in such a short space of time. Vladimir Putin announced that the problems of energy supplies to the Far East will be solved when the Bureya station starts operating at its full capacity. The plant will then be able to guarantee supplies to such problematic areas as the Amur region and the Khabarovsk province, thereby ruling out energy crises and proving the Far East’s economy with a new boost.

Vladimir Putin believes that the opening of the Bureya station will allow electricity bills to be cut by at least 10%, which, in the final analysis, will positively affect the wellbeing of Far East residents.
