“We can consider Malaysia a platform from which to promote our economic interests in the Asia-Pacific region,” President Vladimir Putin said in Samarkand, rounding up the results of the first official visit to Malaysia in the 35-year history of its bilateral relations with Russia

August 6, 2003

The President places great value on the signature of a contract to deliver to Malaysia 18 Su-30MKM airplanes. This contract will be of much benefit to the Russian aviation industry.

Mr Putin said he hoped that plans for Russia to provide post-sales servicing and maintenance of the Russian planes would also go ahead.

The contract’s signature could help successfully promote other Russian aviation technology in Southeast Asia.

Malaysia and Russia have good prospects for cooperation in electronics, space exploration and other high-technology sectors.
