President Vladimir Putin expressed his condolences to Israeli President Moshe Katsav and Prime Minister Ariel Sharon over the terrorist attack in Jerusalem

August 20, 2003

The message said, in part:

“We were deeply upset by the news of yesterday’s cruel terrorist attack in Jerusalem. With firsthand knowledge of the barbaric nature of terrorism, Russians take Israelis’ pain and indignation closer to heart than many.

“I am convinced that, however insidious the terrorists might be, they will be unable to thwart the emergent progress of the Middle East peace settlement and undermine the Israeli nation’s courage and drive for peace. I am sure that the nation and Government of friendly Israel will display the necessary reserve and political wisdom in this tragedy.

“Please give my condolences to the friends and families of the victims and compassion to the survivors.”
