Russia is ready and willing to sign a single currency agreement with Belarus right away, President Vladimir Putin said at a joint press conference with Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko

September 15, 2003

The single currency agreement is a high-level document that meets the interests of both Russia and Belarus. Belarus does have certain concerns about the plans, but they can all be sorted out through the agreements reached between the banks in the two countries.

Mr Putin noted that the introduction of the single currency does not in any way undermine Belarusian sovereignty. The President said that introducing the Russian rouble as a single currency for the Russia-Belarus Union does not require any kind of guarantees to be provided because it is not an issue related to sovereignty.
