President Vladimir Putin chaired a meeting of the Presidential Council on Physical Culture and Sport

October 1, 2003, The Kremlin, Moscow

The nation’s health directly depended on the achievements of sport and fitness, the President stressed.

The previous council meeting set the revival of mass sports as top priority. Children’s sport was part and parcel of the campaign.

Mr Putin called regional and municipal authorities, media outlets and the entire nation to join the work alongside such central offices as the Health and Education ministries and the State Sport Committee. Healthy living must become popular, he stressed.

To make Russian sports competitive was another strategic goal, which required major legislative amendments.

Attending the meeting were State Sport Committee Head Vyacheslav Fetisov, Deputy Prime Ministers Alexei Kudrin and Galina Karelova, Security Council Secretary Vladimir Rushailo, deputy head of the Presidential Executive Office Vyacheslav Surkov, Viktor Kazantsev, Sergei Kirienko, Georgy Poltavchenko and Konstantin Pulikovsky—respective presidential envoys to the Southern, Volga, Central and Far Eastern Federal Districts, several regional governors, known athletes and businessmen.
