The message read, in part:

“I was grieved to learn about the death of a large number of people in a major road disaster in Eastern Java. What makes the accident particularly tragic is a large number of child deaths. We share the grief of the families and of the whole friendly Indonesian people.

“Please convey our sincere condolences to the families of the victims and our sympathy for all those who have suffered as a result of the catastrophe.”
