President Vladimir Putin had a trilateral telephone conversation with German Federal Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder and French President Jacques Chirac

October 14, 2003

Mr Putin, Mr Schroeder and Mr Chirac continued consultations on the situation in Iraq. They expressed concern about the situation, which remained unstable and explosive. Terrorism, which was not subsiding, was one of its dangerous aspects. In connection with this, the leaders stressed their readiness for further constructive work at the UN Security Council to draft a new resolution on Iraq. The parties agreed that the resolution should guarantee effectively increasing the United Nations’ role in Iraqi settlement, giving the Iraqi people sovereignty over their own nation sooner, and enhancing the transparency of the political process and its accountability to the Security Council.

The telephone conversation was held on the German and French leaders’ initiative.
