Mr Putin thanked Mr Zhang for his work and stressed that Russia was actively promoting his nomination as the first executive secretary of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation. He said that, although Mr Zhang was moving to another post, he would stay true to his main goal, to promote closer Russian-Chinese ties.
The day before, the President signed an order officially expressing gratitude to Zhang Deguang for his great personal contribution to the strengthening and development of friendly Russian-Chinese contacts.
